Lending rules

The Sámi University of Applied Sciences Library is a public academic and research library. The collections consist of physical and digital materials, and rights and obligations apply both to borrowing physical library materials and using the library’s electronic resources.

Borrowers have accepted the lending rules when their library card has started to be used in the library. Borrowers are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the lending rules. Employee library cards are integrated into their staff cards, and student library cards are integrated into their student cards. Separate rules apply to other library users.

Library Services

Different borrowing rights are granted based on affiliation with the Sámi University of Applied Sciences. General borrowing rights are given to individuals over 18 years old. This allows them to borrow physical documents in person and use the library’s digital collections on-site.

Employees and students have the right to use all materials owned by the library, provided there are no specific usage restrictions. They can order documents through the library catalog, Oria. These user groups are also offered interlibrary loan services from other libraries.

Students registered at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences, following decentralized study programs or with study locations outside the campus, can receive literature at their residence or local study library/folk library through a separate Sámi University of Applied Sciences agreement.

The library offers services beyond basic services to users affiliated with institutions that have a formal agreement with the library. Individuals not affiliated with such institutions must request services within their own institution or at a public library.

Borrower Responsibilities

Documents borrowed from the library must be registered as checked out. Borrowers are personally responsible for all items registered on their library card. If borrowed materials are further lent to others, the borrower assumes personal responsibility. Borrowing in another borrower’s name is not allowed unless authorized, and such authorization must be provided in writing. Authorized users are registered in the Library System.

Damage to library property may result in liability for replacement and restrictions on continued use of library services, potentially leading to loss of borrowing privileges.

Borrowers are obligated to report changes in address, email, phone number, user affiliation, etc.

Lending

The standard loan period is 4 weeks. For certain document types, the loan period is 1 week. Renewals are allowed as long as there are no requests for the document. If someone else is requesting the document, it will be recalled when the loan period expires. If a borrower wants to renew a loan after the maximum loan period, the document must be returned to the library and registered as a new loan.

The pickup deadline for reserved documents is 5 business days. After that, the document is offered to the next person on the waiting list, or it is returned to the collection.

If borrowed material is not renewed or returned by the end of the loan period, the right to borrow and place orders will expire. To lift the borrowing suspension, the borrower must return the requested material or settle any replacement claims. The library may issue replacement claims, currently a minimum of NOK 600 per document. Borrowers can also arrange to purchase a replacement copy instead. For documents that are difficult to replace, the claim may be higher.

Certain parts of the collection can only be used within the library and will not be available for borrowing. Different loan options are indicated in Oria.

Interlibrary Loan (Remote Loan)

Materials not owned by the library can be borrowed from other libraries. This service is offered only to employees and students of the Sámi University of Applied Sciences, or if such a service is specified in a cooperation agreement with the Sámi University of Applied Sciences. For interlibrary loans, the lending rules set by the owning library apply. In some cases, home loans are not permitted, and the material must be used on-site as directed in the library.

If the library has access to an electronic version of a document, the corresponding paper version may not be available for borrowing.
