25 Years of Sámi Higher Education and 40 Years of Sámi Research

This Autumn Sámi University College celebrates its 25 year anniversary. Official celebration is to be hold in Diehtosiida (Guovdageaidnu/Kautokeino) on August 20, 2014.

Establishment and development of Sámi University College is grounded in needs of Sámi society for its own institution of higher education and research. Sámi University College was established in Guovdageaidnu/Kautokeino on November 1, 1989. The main objective was to meet the society’s needs for Sámi education. Sámi research was strengthened in 2005 when the Nordic Sámi Institute was co-organized with Sámi University College. Nordic Sámi Institute was established in Guovdageaidnu/Kautokeino in 1974 as a result of Sámi cultural and political activities in the Nordic countries. Thus, our institution’s research has a 40 years long history.

25 years long tradition of indigenous education makes Sámi University College an attractive study place for our students. Many decades of indigenous research strengthen our study programs.

Anniversary celebration will happen in connection to the opening of the new academic year 2014-2015 on August 18–22, 2014. Anniversary seminar and the ceremony of the opening of the new academic year are held on August 20 at 12 a.m. – 3 p.m. in Diehtosiida (final program is here ).
